Fun Facts About Angola

  • The capital city of Luanda is widely considered one of the most expensive cities in the world, especially for expatriates. That's because almost everything had to be imported during and after Angola's nearly three-decade-long civil war.
  • The national symbol of Angola is the rare giant sable antelope. Its long, curved horns made European explorers think they’d found a unicorn-like creature. It was believed to be extinct during the civil war but was rediscovered in 2005.
  • Angola boasts a spectacular waterfall called the Kalandula Falls. It is roughly twice the height of Niagara Falls and wider than Victoria Falls at certain times of the year.
  • Cuban troops introduced baseball to Angola during the civil war in the 1970s and 80s. It's not yet a national sport, but you can find tiny pockets of kids playing baseball with homemade bats in many towns still today.
  • Angola has one of the youngest populations in the world. Nearly two-thirds of its citizens are under the age of 25.
