Fun Facts About Portugal

  • At midnight on New Year's Eve, it's a tradition in Portugal to eat 12 raisins — one for each chime of the clock to secure good luck for the upcoming year. But you have to finish them before the final chime.
  • Portugal produces over 50% of the world's cork. Its cork oak trees are so vital and protected that it's illegal to cut them down without specific government permission.
  • Walking under ladders, black cats, and broken mirrors are common bad luck omens in many countries. But if you are traveling in Portugal, make sure you don't open an umbrella indoors, or leave your shoes upside down, as these are equally considered bad omens.
  • The original recipe for the iconic Portuguese custard tarts has been a closely guarded family secret since the 19th century. Only a handful of people know it. The secret dates back to the monks of a monastery who sold the recipe in the 1830s to a bakery which has kept it a secret ever since.
  • There is a library in one university in Poland with a centuries-old colony of bats which protect its valuable antique collection of books from pests like silverfish without expensive and harsh chemicals.
