Fun Facts About Singapore

  • In 1994 Singapore opened the world's first nocturnal zoo. Tourists visiting the Night Safari can see over 900 animals in their natural nighttime habitats under dim, moonlight-mimicking lights.
  • Singapore is called the "Lion City", but no lions have ever lived there wild. The name came from a prince who mistook a tiger for a lion in the 13th century. The name nevertheless stuck and has become a key part of the country's identity.
  • Singapore banned chewing gum sales in 1992 to prevent litter and mischief, like spitting gum on sidewalks. Therapeutic gum, however, is allowed with restrictions.
  • Not flushing a public toilet in Singapore can earn you a fine. Public officers enforce the ordinance with random checks.
  • According to at least one study which timed pedestrians in 32 global cities, Singaporeans are the fastest walkers in the world. They travel at 3.82 mph, a pretty fast clip!
