Fun Facts About The Bahamas
- The Bahamas is a vast archipelago of more than 700 islands and over 2,400 cays. But only about 30 are inhabited, which leaves hundreds of tiny islands to wild pigs and iguanas.
- The typical climate of the Bahamas makes this highly unlikely, but it actually snowed there once. This was in January 1977 during a freak cold snap. However, it melted before it could accumlate on the ground.
- Most linguists say that the name "Bahamas" comes from a Spanish phrase meaning "shallow sea." It's said that Christopher Columbus, upon observing the waters surrounding the islands, used this phrase to accurately describe the geography of the region known for its extensive, shallow, turquoise-colored banks.
- The highest point in the Bahamas is on Cat Island, which rises just 206 feet above sea level. The country is one of the flattest on Earth.
- Pig Beach is an uninhabited island that's home to a famous colony of swimming — you guessed it — pigs. They are a unique tourist draw. These friendly feral hogs happily paddle out to greet boats and beg for snacks.
