Fun Facts About Juices

  • Orange juice is widely considered the most popular fruit juice in the world. It consistently holds a dominant market share of over 50% in the 100% fruit juice category.
  • Since tomatoes are technically fruits (specifically berries), that makes tomato juice a fruit juice, although it is commonly classified and consumed as a vegetable drink.
  • Grape juice was actively promoted in the early 1900s as a non-alcoholic alternative to wine. Its popularity grew as a "temperance beverage" during the Prohibition Era (1920–1933).
  • Carrot juice popularity surged in the U.K. during WWII due to sugar rationing and propaganda. In particular, carrot juice would be mixed with rutabaga juice to produce Carrolade — a nutrient-dense delicacy promoted by the government to manage food shortages.
  • In its pure form, cranberry juice is very tart, acidic and low in sugar, which makes it almost undrinkable. To improve palatability, it is usually sweetened before sale.
  • Pineapple juice contains an enzyme that breaks down complex proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. This assists the body's digestive system and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.
  • Juice labels often use misleading imagery and marketing terms to disguise the fact that they contain very little actual fruit, relying instead on high-fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors.
  • Cold-pressed juice utilizes hydraulic pressure instead of heat to extract liquid from produce. This preserves delicate nutrients, enzymes and natural flavors.
