Fun Facts About Bedrooms
- The phrase "sleep tight" originates from the old days when people used rope beds. The crisscrossed ropes which supported the mattresses of these beds needed to be regularly tightened to prevent sagging. This would ensure a firm surface for a good night's sleep.
- In ancient China, pillows were often made from stone, wood, or porcelain, carved to cradle the head and neck. It was thought soft pillows would drain vital energy from the body, while hard pillows would improve intellect, circulation and overall health.
- Bunk beds date back to medieval times as a space-saving necessity for poor people. But they became much more popular after militaries used them to double up soldiers in barracks.
- In many old houses, bedrooms had no corridors connecting them directly. Instead, bedrooms led straight into each other, saving on building materials and space that would otherwise be used for dedicated hallways. Just imagine the parade of family members at bedtime!
- People produce around 26 gallons of sweat in bed each year. This amount of moisture, combined with dead skin cells and dust mites, explains why mattresses can get pretty unhygenic over time. It also underscores the importance of using mattress protectors and regular cleaning.

Did you know?
The Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars debuted a magnetic floating bed at the 2006 Millionaire Fair in Kortrijk, Belgium. The bed was designed to resemble the Monolith from the film '2001: A Space Odyssey' and is held down by wires so it doesn't float away.
The jury is out whether this sci-fi bed will give you a better night's rest. But if you want to find out, it's going to set you back a cool $1.6 million. However, this is not the world's most expensive bed. That title goes to the Baldacchino Supreme Bed. This bed is hand-crafted from ash, cherry, and chestnut wood, has a canopy adorned with Italian silk, and a headboard featuring diamonds. It's also decorated with over 200 pounds of 24-carat gold. So far only two have been made. And no wonder, since it costs a whopping $6.3 million!
