Fun Facts About Fabrics

  • Linen is one of the world's oldest fabrics, historically valued for its strength. Derived from the flax plant, there is evidence early humans used it over 30,000 years ago. This fabric is what ancient Egyptians used to wrap mummies.
  • Denim was designed for miners and laborers during the California Gold Rush in 1873. Recognizing the need for clothing that wouldn't tear under heavy work, Levi Strauss added copper rivets to high-strain areas like pocket corners and the base of the button fly.
  • Wool is a sustainable material that helps regulate your body temperature year-round. It keeps you warm in winter by trapping body heat in tiny air pockets, and it keeps you cool by naturally wicking moisture away from the skin.

  • Silk is made by silkworms. Each cocoon can produce a single, continuous and incredibly strong thread of raw silk that can measure up to 3,000 feet long.
  • Polyester is a form of plastic. It is derived from petroleum — the same base material used in water bottles.
  • Velvet is not a specific material, but rather a weaving technique. It is traditionally made from silk, but is now more commonly produced from cotton, polyester, or rayon.
  • Rayon was originally called artificial silk. Developed in the late-1800s, it was marketed to provide the luxurious look and feel of real silk at a fraction of the cost.
  • Cashmere is a highly coveted, lightweight, and natural fiber obtained from the soft undercoat of specific goats from regions like Mongolia and China.
  • Nylon was first used for toothbrush bristles in the late-1930s. Stockings made of nylon came later and quickly became a massive hit.
  • Cotton is a highly breathable, natural fiber. Cultivated for over 5,000 years, it is exceptionally absorbent and can hold up to 27 times its weight in water.

  • Tweed got its name by mistake. The Scottish term "tweel" was misread by a London merchant in 1826, likely because the fabric was produced near the River Tweed in Scotland.
  • Spandex is a highly elastic, synthetic fiber. It can stretch 5–8 times its original length. The name was created by rearranging the letters of the word "expands."
