Fun Facts About Coffee-Consuming Countries

  • Finland is the world's #1 coffee-consuming country per capita, with people averaging 4–5 cups daily, or around 26 pounds of coffee per year. By some estimates, that's more than double many other nations.
  • Italy may not lead in per-capita volume, but it revolutionized coffee worldwide with the espresso machine. Italians follow strict rules, like never ordering a cappuccino after 11 a.m., because they believe that milk is heavy and interferes with digestion, making it a morning-only habit.
  • Germans view coffee, especially strong black coffee, as a workday essential. They enjoy it multiple times a day, averaging between 3–5 cups, making Germany the second-largest consumer of coffee globally.
  • Canada holds its own with strong coffee habits, and have even invented their own coffee lexicon. Walk into any Canadian coffee shop (not just Tim Hortons) and order a "Double-Double" and staff will understand you want a coffee with two creams and two sugars — it's not just a "Timmies" thing.
  • France gave the world the elegant cafe au lait (coffee with hot milk), often served in big bowls for breakfast croissant dipping, and cafe creme (espresso with steamed milk and foam). Both drinks can, and should, be ordered at a French sidewalk cafe for easy people-watching and leisurely sipping.
