Fun Facts About Jersey Shore

- The world's first boardwalk was built in Atlantic City in 1870, originally to stop sand from being tracked onto the fancy carpets in area hotels.
- Want to blend in better when visiting the Jersey Shore? Note that locals never say they're "going to the beach." Rather, it is "going down the shore" (or just "the Shore"). It's a phrase that captures the whole vibe of the place, boardwalks and all.
- Independent and unique businesses make up around 90% of the commercial landscape in many Jersey Shore towns. You'll find everything, from shops specializing in homemade chocolates and saltwater taffy, to yoga studios and psychic shacks.
- In 2012, Superstorm Sandy destroyed parts of the Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, leaving the Star Jet roller coaster standing upright in the ocean. It was a surreal image that became a powerful symbol of the storm's immense destruction.
- Nature lovers: be sure to visit the Jersey Shore in the fall when it is less crowded. Because it tranforms into a major hub for wildlife, including Monarch butterflies, migrating birds and an assortment of sea creatures.
- The Atlantic City Boardwalk was once called "America's Playground." It inspired the Monopoly game's iconic properties Boardwalk and Park Place, as well as the classic song "Under the Boardwalk."
