Fun Facts About Cats
- Most people know that kittens born to the same mother cat is called a littler. But fewer people know that a group of unrelated kittens is called a kindle, and a group of adult cats is a clowder. Other, less common collective nouns for cats include glaring, pounce, and cluster.
- Cats spend roughly 70% of their lives sleeping, averaging 13–16 hours a day. This behavior is rooted in their predatory evolution to conserve energy for short bursts of hunting activity. During those periods, the average cat can jump up to 5–6 times its own body length in a single leap.
- Domestic cats share 95.6% of their DNA with tigers, which explains their shared core behaviors of stalking, pouncing, grooming and scent marking.
- Cats have up to 20 different vocalizations, including meows, purrs, hisses, trills, yowls and chirps. But they mostly meow to communicate with humans and not with other cats.
- A cat's purr vibrates at frequencies between 25 and 150 Hz. These soothing vibrations are known to promote healing in bones, muscle tissues, pain relief and cause a reduction in inflammation.
- A mixed tabby domestic cat named Creme Puff holds the world record for the oldest known pet cat. She lived 3 days past her 38th birthday, far surpassing the typical lifespan of domestic cats.
- Cats have two dozen more bones than humans, mostly in their flexible spines and tails enabling superior agility, balance and the ability to squeeze into tight spaces. Cats can also rotate their ears 180 degrees independently, which allows them to pinpoint sounds with incredible accuracy.
- Contrary to what most people assume, giving a cat regular milk will upset their stomach and could even induce vomiting. That's because most cats are lactose intolerant after kittenhood.
