Fun Facts About Redheads

  • Red hair is the rarest natural hair color. It occurs in just 1–2% of the global population (roughly 70–158 million people) thanks to a recessive genetic mutation.
  • Around 13% of the population of Scotland are redheads — the highest concentration of natural redheads of any country in the world. This is followed closely by Ireland, at about 10%.
  • Redheads typically skip the traditional salt-and-pepper grey hair stage as they age. Instead, their hair fades from vibrant red to copper, strawberry blonde, and eventually goes white or silver. That redheads retain their color much longer than other hair colors is due to the strength of the pigment.
  • On average, redheads have fewer hair strands (around 90,000) compared to blondes (110,000–150,000) and brunettes (100,000–140,000). But each strand is significantly thicker and coarser, so red hair generally looks fuller and more voluminous.
  • Research shows redheads need about 20% more anesthesia during surgery and are more sensitive to certain types of pain, while other studies indicate a higher tolerance for thermal (hot/cold) pain.
  • Redheads are more likely to be left-handed. Both red hair and left-handedness are recessive traits which tend to cluster together more often than in the general population.
  • The combination of red hair and blue eyes is very rare, found in only 0.17% of the world's population, or roughly 1 in 600 people.
  • Redheads produce Vitamin D faster and more efficiently than people with darker hair or skin. This ability is considered an evolutionary adaptation for ancestors in the cloudy, northern climates of Europe where sunlight is scarce.
