Fun Facts About Shades of Green

  • The human eye can distinguish more shades of green than any other color due to evolutionary pressures, allowing our ancestors to differentiate foliage for food, water, and safety.
  • Night-vision goggles use glowing green monochrome because the human eye is most sensitive to green wavelengths. Green is positioned in the middle of the visual spectrum, allowing us to see finer details and more shades in low-light conditions.
  • Olive green takes its name from unripe, Mediterranean olives. Widely adopted during World War II for uniforms, vehicles, and gear, it blends well with forest and jungle environments.
  • Mint green is a pale, fresh pastel shade inspired by the herb mint. It became hugely popular in mid-20th century home decor, especially for 1950s kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Lime green — a vivid, almost neon yellow-green — exploded in popularity during the 1990s rave, club and sportswear scenes. It's now a classic shade for tennis balls and highlighter markers.
  • Emerald green is a rich, jewel-like shade that got a notorious reputation in the 19th century because the pigment contained arsenic. Used heavily in wallpaper, textiles and candles, it released toxic fumes and caused illness and fatalities.
  • Forest green is a deep, almost blackish green that mimics dense woodland shadows and foliage. Because of its earthy undertones, it's a favorite for outdoor gear
  • Often referred to as the "new neutral" by designers, sage green is named after the herb sage and is considered one of the most calming shades.
