Fun Facts About Indian Tribes
- The Apache refered to themselves as "the people", but the name "Apache" was adopted by Spanish settlers, which means "enemy" as they were considered opponents by other tribes.
- The Choctaw adopted a written constitution in 1826. They are renowned for their intense, traditional stickball game and their skilled, detailed basketry.
- The Comanche were so dominant on the Plains that their territory was effectively an empire. As master horsemen, they controlled trade, buffalo hunting grounds, and dictated terms to Spanish, Mexican and early American settlers, preventing their further westward expansion for decades.
- The Pueblo peoples of the American Southeast are renowned for constructing and inhabiting multi-story adobe dwellings that had been continuously used for over 1,000 years.
- The Seminole tribe of Florida were the only tribe never to sign a formal peace treaty with the U.S. government. Following decades of conflict, the U.S. government withdrew from the region, unable to force the small tribe to surrender.
- The Great Sioux Nation comprises three distinct, linguistically-related groups: Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota. Originally inhabiting areas of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, they later migrated west onto the Great Plains.
