Fun Facts About Safari Animals

  • Elephants can recognize themselves in a mirror, a strong indicator of self-awareness, complex cognition, and empathy.
  • Lions sleep up to 20 hours a day. But that's not because they're lazy. It's a smart energy conservation strategy allowing them to power short, intense bursts of activity for hunting and territorial defense.
  • Giraffe only need about 30 minutes of sleep per day, often in short naps standing up. This gives them plenty of time to use their 20-inch-long purple tongues to strip leaves from thorny trees without getting hurt.
  • Despite weighing up to 8,000 pounds, hippos reach speeds of around 18–20 mph for short bursts, faster than most humans.
  • Hippos secrete "blood sweat" (which is neither blood nor sweat) from pores in their skin, which acts as a sunscreen and moisturizer. It also has antibacterial properties to prevent infection.
  • A rhino's horn is made of keratin, the same fibrous protein as human hair and fingernails. It continously grows, so if broken off, the rhino gets a replacement.
  • Nile crocodiles continuously replace their teeth throughout life whenever they wear down or break. At any given time they have about 5 dozen teeth, and a single tooth can be replaced up to 50 times. That means a crocodile may go through a total of 3,000 teeth over its lifetime.
  • Leopards are exceptionally strong, able to haul prey heavier than themselves up into trees to eat in peace.
  • Hyenas possess incredibly powerful jaws which can easily crush large bones to access nutrient-rich marrow. This makes them formidable hunters and recyclers, not just scavengers as they are commonly known.
