Fun Facts About Hair Care

  • Hair is considered dead tissue once it leaves the follicle. At that point it lacks living cells, blood supply, or nerves. That's why it doesn't hurt when you get a haircut.
  • Hair growth is fastest when you are between the ages of 15 and 30 (about 0.5 inches per month). As you enter your 30s and 40s it starts to decrease, slowing down to as little as 0.1 inches per month for some people.
  • Washing your hair every day doesn't make it fall out more because modern shampoos are gentle enough to use daily. You normally lose 40–120 hairs a day anyway — shampooing just washes away hairs already detached, making it seem like you are losing a lot.
  • Did you know your natural hair color determines how many hair strands you have on your head?
    • Blondes have the highest density. They average around 150,000 fine hairs.
    • Brunettes fall in the middle, having around 110,000 hairs.
    • Black hair falls in the middle, averaging around 100,000 hairs.
    • Redheads have the lowest density. They average around 90,000 coarse hairs.
  • A single strand of human hair is surprisingy strong. It's capable of holding up to 3.5 ounces (about the weight of four standard AA batteries or a small apple) without breaking.
  • Extreme emotional or physical stress can trigger a condition where a significant portion of your hair prematurely falls out. This occurs typically 2 to 3 months after the stressful event, but it is temporary and self-correcting. Once the stressor is managed, hair will begin regrowing within 3 to 6 months.
  • Hair products can't premanently repair split ends. They only temporarily glue the split parts together with polymers and proteins until the next wash or brush.
  • Ancient Egyptians used crocodile and hippopotamus fat, along with castor oil and honey, in hair treatments for conditioning, styling, and for combating hair loss.
  • Shaving does not make hair grow back thicker or darker. It just creates a blunt edge that feels coarser and appears darker against the skin until it grows out.
  • Trimming hair every 6–8 weeks doesn't speed up hair growth. But it does prevent breakage and split ends from traveling up the shaft. So your hair looks healthier and retains more length over time.
