Fun Facts About Apple Technology
- Ever notice that Apple devices in advertisements almost always show the time as 9:41 AM? That's a nod to the moment Steve Jobs publicly unveiled the original iPhone in 2007, where the goal was to perfectly align the device's clock with the actual time during the presentation.
- The very first Apple I computer sold for $666.66, which was a one-third markup on its $500 wholesale cost. Released in 1976, about 200 units of these "Beasts" were produced, although co-founder Steve Wozniak claims he was unaware of any Biblical connotations — he just liked repeating numbers that were easy to type.
- Steve Jobs came up with the company name after working in an apple orchard while on a fruitarian diet. He thought the name sounded "fun, spirited, and not intimidating".
- The leading "i" in Apple's iMac, iPhone, iPad, etc. has multiple meanings. Most believe it simply stands for the word internet. But according to the company, it was also chosen to stand for individual, instruct, inform, even intelligent.
- It's long been rumored that Apple has a "no smoking" rule which allows them to void a product's warranty if it has internal evidence of cigarette smoke residue, on the grounds it poises a bioharzard to repair technicians. Indeed there have been confirmed instances of warranty service denial for damage caused by extreme environmental conditions. But Apple's official warranty has never explicitly mentioned cigarette smoke.
- Apple pioneered the consumer digital camera. It was designed with Kodak in 1994 and was called Apple QuickTake 100. Although a commercial flop, it foreshadowed the company's future success with cameras built into the iPhone.
- The iPhone was almost called a "TelePod." This name was meant to blend the words "telephone" and "iPod".
- The first Apple product in a major Hollywood film was the PowerMac in Mission: Impossible (1996). It was used to block mobile phone communications during a critical moment in the film.
