Fun Facts About Kitten Names

  • Kittens learn their own names quite fast. They even quickly learn to recognized the names of other cats in the household. But unlike dogs, cats were not bred to respond to human cues. So while they might know their name, they can choose to ignore it.
  • Luna has topped the list of most popular cat names in recent years. It's partly inspired by the beloved Harry Potter character Luna Lovegood. It's quickly followed by names like Bella, Leo, Milo, and Oliver. The classic names Kitty, Max, and Charlie also remain popular.
  • According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first known use of the term "tomcat" was in the late 1700s. The term gained widespread use after the book The Life and Adventures of a Cat (1760) popularized the name "Tom" for a male cat.
  • The word kitten comes from Middle English kitoun, which was borrowed from the Old French chitoun or cheton, meaning a "young cat" or "little cat." Going back further, these derive from the Late Latin word cattus. The first known use of "kitten" in English was in the 1300s.
  • The oldest recorded cat name is either Nedjem (meaning "sweet" or "pleasant") from ancient Egypt (dating to around 1950 B.C.), or Bouhaki from around the same time. Cats were sacred back then, but individual names for cats were rare.

Although all kittens are born with blue eyes, you'll have to wait before you get to see them. Because they keep their eyes closed for a week to protect their still developing eyesight.
