Fun Facts About Indian Tribes
- The Ottawa were major traders. Their name actually comes from a word meaning "to trade" to "to buy and sell." Today Ottawa serves as the capital city of Canada.
- The name Omaha means "upstream people" which describes their migration along the Missouri River after separating from related tribes who moved downstream. The city of Omaha, Nebraska, was later named after the tribe.
- The Moosonee people are the Moose Cree, an Indigenous group residing in Northeastern Ontario, Canada near James Bay. Today Moosonee is known as one of the few communities accessible mainly by train or plane, reflecting its deep Indigenous roots.
- The Mohave (or Mojave) people traditionally farmed along the Colorado River using natural flood cycles for irrigation. They planted crops like corn, beans and pumpkins.
- The Crow Nation had a social structure where women were allowed to become respected political and economic leaders. Some even became renowned warriors.
- Many Arctic Indigenous (Eskimo) peoples traditionally crafted waterproof kayaks from diftwood/whalebone covered in sealskin, and designed warm, hooded parkas from animal hides — technologies still used worldwide today.
