Fun Facts About 101 Dalmatians
- The animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) features exactly 6,469,952 spots across its 113,760 frames. The animators verified this count, noting that Pongo has 72 spots, Perdita has 68, and the puppies average 32 spots each.
- The incredible detail (e.g., millions of dalmatian spots) in the 1961 film was made possible by the pioneering use of a new Xerox camera system.
- There are several hidden Easter eggs in the 1961 animated classic film. For instance, in the "Twilight Bark" scene (about 35 minutes in), characters from Lady and the Tramp (1955) appear to help spread the alarm.
- The story was inspired by real life. Author Dodie Smith received her first Dalmatian, named Pongo, as a gift from her husband in 1934. In 1943 their Dalmatian Folly had a litter of 15 puppies, including one that was born lifeless but revived by her husband — just as Roger does in the story.
- In the original 1956 novel, the couple's last name is Dearly, not Radcliffe. Roger is also described as a "financial wizard" rather than a struggling songwriter, as in the Disney version.
- The voice actor who provided the original voice of Donald Duck also provided many of the dog barks and vocal sounds for Disney's 1961 classic animated film.
- The names of the original 15 puppies reflect their personalities or spot patterns. For example:
- Lucky – has a horseshoe-shaped spot on this back
- Rolly – has a rolly-polly physique and big appetite
- Dipstick – has a black-tipped tail, resembling a dipstick
- Patch – has a large black patch of fur over one eye
- Wizzer – has to tinkle-tinkle frequently
- Freckles – has distinctive freckle-like spots on his snout
- Two-Tone – has one black ear and one white ear
- Dodie Smith wrote a sequel novel called The Starlight Barking (1967). It introduces magical spells and superpowers into the ongoing storyline. It has never been adapted by Disney.
