Fun Facts About The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
- George Lucas personally financed the $30 million sequel using profits from the original Star Wars (1977). This avoided giving creative control to a major studio — a high-risk move that paid off handsomely.
- Carrie Fisher (Leia) often stood on a box during scenes with Harrison Ford (Han Solo). That's because she's a full foot shorter than him.
- The script called for Han Solo to reply "I love you too" when Leia tells him "I love you." Harrison Ford instead improvised a response that fit his character perfectly, the iconic "I know".
- Mark Hamill had to repeatedly bang his head (reportedly 16 times) on the low ceiling of Yoda's hut before the director was satisfied with the comedic moment.
- The opening Hoth scenes were filmed in Norway during one of the worst snowstorms in 50 years. No special effects were added for the weather. The cast and crew endured −29° F weather and near-constant whiteouts.
- Harrison Ford was not fully committed to continuing with a third film. This is what led to Han Solo being frozen in carbonite at the end of The Empire Strikes Back. It basically served as a built-in exit strategy.
- The film's most famous line is often misquoted. Darth Vader never says "Luke, I am your father." The actual line is "No, I am your father."
- The Empire Strikes Back is widely regarded as the best film in the Star Wars franchise. Its darker, more character-driven tone, with iconic revelations and moments, largely accounts for why critics and fans feel it surpasses the original and all the others.
