Dennis Quaid auditioned for the role of Russell Ziskey opposite Bill Murray's character. But Murray was adamant that Harold Ramis play Russell. Murray even said he would not do the film if Ramis failed to land the role. This was because they were actual friends in real life, and Murray figured Ramis could help him re-write dialogue and otherwise improvise scenes. So Quaid lost the role, but ultimately did appear in the film. You can see him briefly in the graduation scene working as an extra.
