The Movies of 1982
Trivia, Word Search, and a Quiz
It was June 11, 1982 that Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was released and began its historic climb to become the highest grossing movie to date. That meant surpassing the equally out-of-this-world Star Wars, which held the title since its initial release in 1977. Of course E.T. was itself unseated eleven years later by Jurassic Park (1993). But since this was also a movie Spielberg directed, he got to keep his boasting rights awhile longer.
Here's some more trivia from the world of cinema in 1982:
- Actresses born this year include Jessica Biel, who later starred in the mystery The Illusionist (2006), and Kirsten Dunst, who went on to play the title character in Marie Antoinette (2006).
- Nicolas Cage and Eric Stoltz land their first movie roles in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, as do actors Anthony Michael Hall in Six Pack, Kevin Kline in Sophie's Choice, Eddie Murphy in 48 Hrs., and Paul Reiser in Diner.
- On December 17, Tootsie is released, becoming the highest grossing comedy to date. Ironically, Dustin Hoffman once said it was never a comedy for him.
- During the filming of a helicopter scene in Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983), Vic Morrow and two child actors are tragically killed. This leads to the introduction of new procedures and safety standards in the movie industry.
- Stars dying this year include funnymen John Belushi, who played the memorable Bluto in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), and Marty Feldman. Incidently, it was recently confirmed by members of the rock band Aerosmith that Feldman's hilarious 'Walk this way' gag in Young Frankenstein (1974) inspired their hit song by the same name.
