To keep interest going during the initial release, Ivan Reitman ran a version of the in-movie commercial that included an actual 1-800 number. Callers heard a recorded message from Murray and Akroyd saying "Hi. We're out catching ghosts right now." The campaign was highly effective, generating 1,000 calls every hour around the clock for weeks.
