The Movies of 1987

Trivia, Word Search, and a Quiz

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, Paramount Pictures launches a new on-screen logo. Two of its movies, Fatal Attraction and Beverly Hills Cop II, go on to gross in the top three for the year. But it is ultimately beaten out by Buena Vista's release of Leonard Nimoy's surprising box office hit Three Men and a Baby.

Here's some more trivia from the world of cinema in 1987:

  • Elliot Page and Evan Rachel Wood are born this year. They would later star together in Into the Forest (2015). Zac Efron and Ronda Rousey are also born this year.
  • Actor Christian Bale makes his big screen debut in Empire of the Sun, as does Jason Bateman in Teen Wolf Too, Bryan Cranston in Amazon Women on the Moon, Dylan McDermott in Hamburger Hill, Ben Stiller in Hot Pursuit, and Brad Pitt in No Man's Land as an uncredited extra.
  • Ishtar becomes a notorious box office failure, recouping only $14 million of its $51 million budget.
  • Lethal Weapon is the first movie to show a modern cell phone, followed later in the year more famously by Wall Street when Gordon "Greed is Good" Gekko uses his grey Motorola brick on the beach.
  • Golden Age star Rita Hayworth dies this year, as does Fred Astaire a month later. The two famously danced together in You Were Never Lovelier (1942) and You'll Never Get Rich (1941). Also dying is Lorne Green, and actor-comedians Danny Kaye and Jackie Gleason.
