Executive producer Steve Spielberg's first choice to play Barney Rubble was Danny DeVito. But DeVito declined because he felt his persona was too rough for the character. He suggested instead Rick Moranis who was ultimately cast. This was much to John Goodman's liking, who went on record to say he enjoyed working with Moranis immensely (and on a movie he otherwise disliked making because of the hot weather). Speaking of Spielberg, if you look closely at the opening credits, you'll see his name is spelled out as Speilrock in a funny reference to the prehistoric theme of the movie. In a later scene, you can also spot a playground named Jurassic Park which is, of course, the name of his hit movie release in the previous year.
