Anne Rice, the author of novel on which the movie is based, was initially opposed to casting Tom Cruise to play Lestat. She described the character in her novel as a tall, imposing figure and Cruise is only 5'7". Rice instead favored actor Rutger Hauer who is much taller at 6'1". When Brad Pitt (5'11") was cast opposite Cruise, special effects and staging were used to manage their height difference. This included building platforms for Cruise to stand on and adding inches to his boots. For one memorable scene in a park where the two walk side-by-side, the production crew dug a specially made ditch for the taller Brad Pitt to walk in. In this way the actors appeared to be the same height on camera.
