Will Smith turned down the lead role in The Matrix (1999) for two reasons. First, he was a big fan of the television series Wild Wild West and wanted to do the film adaptation. Second, he was confused by the Wachowskis' script which introduced a new concept to audiences. Smith later said it was the worst decision of his career and was embarrassed by the film's performance (it was a critical and commercial failure). Not only that, when he asked his mother what she thought of the film, she replied "You've done better, baby." Ouch!
