The prop department created the full-sized Mark III suit out of 450 individual parts. According to Robert Downey Jr., it was quite heavy and very uncomfortable to wear. After seeing advancements in CGI, he successfully lobbied the filmmakers to wear less physical armor so he'd have more freedom of movement. Visual effects artists from Industrial Light & Magic later integrated the real suit with digital enhancements.
