The movie is loosely based on the true story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter. Ten weeks after their wedding in 1993, the newlyweds were in a serious car cash. Krickitt suffered a brain injury that erased all memory of Kim and their marriage. The Carpenters are devout Christians and credit their faith with providing the strength and resilience to rebuild their marriage. While they were frustrated with the removal of their Christian faith from the story, they are generally supportive of the movie. They feel it acts as a gateway to lead people to read their book The Vow: The Kim and Krickitt Carpenter Story. This book contains the full account of their experience.
