Did you know?
Usually a film receives an R rating based on specific elements like graphic violence, strong language, sexual content and depictions of illegal drug use. But The Conjuring had none of these elements, yet it still received an R rating. When the filmmakers asked the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) why, they were told the reason was for "sequences of disturbing violence and terror." In other words, their movie was just too scary. Since there was no way to edit the film to make it less terrifying without fundamentally changing its tone, the filmmakers simply accepted the less-box office friendly rating without appeal.
These terms include actor, character, and director names; other people, places, and things encountered in the storyline; themes, ideas, and subject matter handled in the movie — basically, anything that seems reasonable.
