Director Quentin Tarantino is a big fan of John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) and drew inspiration from that film for his The Hateful Eight. This included casting Kurt Russell again, as well as that film's composer, Ennio Morricone. Morricone was not able to write a full-length composition in the available time, so he repurposed unused orchestral pieces from The Thing to quickly create a new score. This worked out rather well. While Morricone's score for The Thing was nominated for a Razzie for Worst Musical Score, he won the Oscar for Best Original Score for The Hateful Eight.
