Fun Facts About Afghanistan
- Afghanistan was a major hippie-trail stop in the late-1960s and early-1970s. Back then Western tourists partied in the capital of Kabul, skied the Hindu Kush and mailed home postcards that read they were visiting the "Switzerland of Central Asia."
- The world’s first oil paintings were made in Afghanistan. You'll find the 1,400-year-old murals from the 7th century in the Bamiyan Valley caves — centuries before Europeans starting using oil-based paints.
- Afghans invented the modern game of "kite running." This national obsession involves flying kites with strings coated with powdered glass. The object is to cut your opponent's kite, then to chase and catch the kite as it falls down to the ground.
- Because pork consumption is not permitted in the predominantly Islamic nation, Afghanistan has only one pig. His name is Khanzir and he lives at the Kabul Zoo. He is famously spoiled and likely pretty lonely!
- Super-rare snow leopards still roam wild in remote and mountainous parts of the country.
