Fun Facts About Albania

  • Most people nod their heads up and down when they mean "yes" and shake it side to side for "no". But Albanians curiously reverse this, leading to sometimes hilarious confusion for first-time visitors.
  • Albania has more than 750,000 bunkers, or about one for every four of its citizens. These tiny concrete mushroom-like structures were built during the communist era of 1945–91. You'll find them on beaches, in vineyards — just about everywhere. Some of the larger ones have been turned into cafes, hotels and even tattoo parlors.
  • Albanians have an evening stroll ritual. Every night around sunset entire towns will shut down and thousands of people will leisurely walk up and down the streets socializing, gossiping and people-watching.
  • Albania was declared the world's first officially atheist state by the communist regime in 1967. Religious freedom was only restored in 1991 after the collapse of communism.
  • Mother Teresa was Albanian. Her birth name was Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu
