Fun Facts About Armenia
- Armenia officially adopted Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD. It is the first country in the world to do so.
- In 2011, Armenia made chess a mandatory subject in primary schools for children in grades two, three, and four. No wonder the country has produced so many top chess grandmasters — as of early 2025, a total of 44!
- The oldest known winery was discovered in a cave in Armenia. The wine press and fermentation vats found there date back to 4100 BC, making it over 6,100 years old.
- The scientific name for apricot is Prunus armeniaca, which translates to "Armenian plum". Despite the name, apricots likely originated in China and not Armenia.
- The capital of Yerevan is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. It was founded in 782 BC.
