Fun Facts About Azerbaijan
- Azerbaijan's nickname "Land of Fire" comes from its ancient Zoroastrian fire temples and eternal flames fueled by natural gas seeping from the ground.
- The world's first oil well was drilled in Azerbaijan in 1846 — that's 13 years before the famous Drake Well in Titusville, Pennsylvania.
- Azerbaijan is one of the few places where you can stand in Europe and Asia at the same time. Tourists will find the official Europe-Asia boundary marker just outside its capital city of Baku.
- Roughly half the planet's 800 or so active mud volcanoes regularly erupt with cold mud and sometimes flames in Azerbaijan.
- Baku is the world's lowest-lying national capital, situated at 92 feet below sea level.
