Fun Facts About Barbados
- Barbados is the only place outside the US that George Washington ever visited. He did so as a 19-year-old in 1751. The house where he stayed is now a museum.
- Barbados is home of the grapefruit. It was first developed in the 18th century as a natural cross between a sweet orange and a pomelo. Locals still call it "the forbidden fruit."
- Barbados is the flying fish capital of the world. This national symbol even appears on its passport cover and one-dollar coin.
- Barbados holds the unique historical distinction among Caribbean islands of never having been successfully invaded by a foreign power after the British established their initial settlement in 1627.
- Barbados has one of the oldest parliaments in the world. Established in 1639, it is the third-oldest continuous parliament in the Commonwealth, after the UK and Bermuda.
