Fun Facts About Belize
- Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. This is thanks to its history as British Honduras.
- The giant marine sinkhole known as the Great Blue Hole is over 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep. When you fly overhead it looks like a perfect dark blue circle in the middle of the ocean. Jacques Cousteau ranked it a top scuba dive site.
- Belize has over 900 Maya temple sites and most of them are still covered by jungle growth.
- The waters near Placencia is a prime location if you want to swim with the harmless whale shark.
- Belize has one of the highest densities of jaguars anywhere in the world due to its extensive rainforests (over 60% of the country is forested) and its low human population density (the lowest in Central America).
