Fun Facts About Benin
- Benin is considered the birthplace of Voodoo, one of the world's oldest relgions. About 40–60% of the people of Benin still practice it traditionally.
- Benin is home to a monumental tribute honoring the legendary Dahomey Amazons, an all-female military regiment who terrified European colonizers. They were one of the last forces to surrender to the French in 1894.
- Benin has a Temple of Pythons which houses dozens of royal pythons considered protectors of the local town. If they are brave enough, tourists can have the snakes draped around their necks for photos.
- Benin's national football team is nicknamed The Squirrels. They say its because squirrels are small but fearless and can climb anything.
- Thanks to its heavy French colonial past and the strong educational system maintained after independence, Benin has one of the highest literacy rates in West Africa. It produces an unusually high number of doctors, professors, and writers per capita. This has earned Benin the nickname the Latin Quarter of Africa.
