Fun Facts About Bhutan
- Bhutan is the only country in the world that prioritizes citizen well-being over economic growth. It does this by tracking Gross National Happiness (GHS). This index is actually enshrined in its constitution.
- Bhutan is the world's only carbon-negative country, absorbing three times more CO2 than it emits. Its constitution mandates at least 60% of the country must remain forested (it's about 72% today).
- It is illegal to sell tobacco in Bhutan. And plastic bags have been banned since 1999 — way before it became trendy.
- There was no internet, nor even television, in Bhutan until 1999.
- Bhutan was mostly closed to the outside world until the 1960s–70s. The first group of paying tourists only arrived in 1974.
