Fun Facts About Botswana

- Since gaining independence from Britain in 1966, Botswana has held free and fair elections every five years without interruption. This is extremely rare in Africa.
- The Kalahari Desert covers about 70% of the country and has incredible wildlife. There you'll find the iconic black-maned lion, along with cheetahs, gemsbok, and meerkats. It's a prime African safari destination.
- Botswana has one of the sparsest populations in the world, with only about 2.5 million people in a land the size of France or Texas.
- Botswana's journey from extreme poverty at independence in 1966 to an upper-middle-income nation is largely thanks to prudent management and reinvesting its diamond wealth into free education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
