Fun Facts About Bulgaria
- The Varna Necropolis contains the oldest processed gold in the world. It dates back to 4,600–4,200 BC, predating Egyptian and Mesopotamian goldwork by centuries.
- Bulgaria's Cyrillic alphabet is used by over 250 million people today. It was created in the 9th century and is used in Russia, Serbia, Ukraine, Mongolia, and many other countries.
- With slight spelling variations, Bulgaria is the only country in Europe that has never changed its name since it was established in 681 AD. That's about 1,350 years straight.
- Bulgaria produced an early digital watch called the "Elektronika". It dates back to the late-1960s–early-70s and is displayed at the Smithsonian Institute. The Elekronika is often cited as the world's first digital watch, predating those watches Casio made famous later on.
- About one-third of Bulgaria is covered in forest. It's home to Europe's largest population of brown bears, wolves, and jackals living in the wild outside of Russia.
