  • While lemurs are unique to Madagascar, the Comoros Islands host the critically endangered Livingstone's fruit bat (a flying fox) that has a wingspan up to 4.5 feet.
  • Comoros is the world's leading source and producer of ylang-ylang essential oil used in high-end perfumes like Chanel No. 5. The flowers are still hand-picked and distilled traditionally on the islands.
  • Along with its "Perfume Isles" nickname first used by French colonists, Comoros is also sometimes called the "Moon Islands" due to their crescent shape.
  • Since independence from France in 1975, Comoros has had over 20 completed or attempted coups. This has earned it the additional nickname "Coup-Coup Islands."
