Fun Facts About Croatia
- Croatia has the world's smallest town. With about 20–30 residents, the town has medieval walls, churches, and a charming history.
- Croatia has over 1,200 islands, islets and reef, but only 47–50 are inhabited. This makes it the most indented coastline in Europe after Norway.
- Croatia invented the necktie (cravat). It originated with Croatian mercenaries serving in France during the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century. They wore distinctive knotted neckerchiefs, which the French loved and turned into the modern necktie.
- Most evidence points to the Croatian region of Dalmatia where the Dalmatian originated. But the exact origin of the spotted dog is considered a mystery.
- Croatia likely gave the world the idea of the parachute. There's a design for the "flying man" detailed in a 1595 book. Its author reportedly tested it himself by jumping from a tower in Venice — over 100 years before the first official parachute jump was made from a hot-air balloon in Paris.
