Fun Facts About Cuba
- The communist state of Cuba has strict baby naming laws that allow the Civil Registry to reject certain names. One of the banned names is Yankee.
- Cuba has one of the highest doctor-to-patient ratios in the world. The ratio is about 1 doctor per 106 people. This is significantly better than many rich nations, including the United States where the ratio is 1 per 385 people.
- Because of the embargo, Coca-Cola cannot be officially sold in Cuba (although you can sometimes find smuggled cans for outrageous prices).
- There is a McDonald's in Cuba. But it is run by the US Navy in Guantanamo Bay. Cubans can't go there. It is only meant for American troops.
- The world’s smallest bird lives in Cuba. At around 2 inches long, the bee hummingbird weighs less than a dime.
