- According to Greek mythology, Cyprus is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. She is said to have emerged from the sea foam near what is today called Aphrodite's Rock, on the southwest coast of Cyprus.
- Cyprus is home to incredibly ancient olive trees, many over 800 years old.
- Cyprus has a huge number of feral cats. Legend says the mother of Constantine the Great sent hundreds of cats from Egypt and Palestine to fight a snake infestation. They multiplied so greatly over the centuries that the government of today has cat feeding programs.
- Recently discoverd wells in western Cyprus date back 10,500 years, making them some of the world's oldest known man-made structures.
- While Italy looks like a high-heeled boot kicking a football, Cyprus is usually compared to a frying pan or tobacco leaf.
