Fun Facts About Democratic Republic Of The Congo
- The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is home to the world's second-largest rainforest. The Congo Basin absorbs massive amounts of CO2 and is sometimes called "the second lung of the Earth."
- The Congo River is Africa's second-longest river (after the Nile), but the world's deepest (over 720 feet at one point). It has such immense hydropower potential that it could theoretically power the entire continent's electricity needs.
- The okapi, or "forest giraffe," is a shy, rare mammal that only lives in the DRC's rainforests. It looks like a cross between a giraffe, a zebra, and a deer.
- The DRC once had a space program in the 1970s–80s called "Troposphere". It aimed to launch high-altitude rockets, but it ultimately failed.
- The DRC is incredibly mineral-rich, including possessing over 70% of the world's supply of cobalt. There's also coltan, diamonds, gold, copper and more. But such mineral wealth is also a curse, as it exacerbates armed conflict, as groups fight for control over mines and trade routes.
