  • Over 130 pyramids have been discovered in Egypt. Most serve primarily as elaborate tombs for pharaohs and royalty, ensuring their journey to the afterlife.
  • Egypt receives only about one inch of rain per year. It is one of the driest places on Earth.
  • Depending on the direction the figures faced, ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs could be written and read from left to right or right to left
  • The pyramids were not built by slaves as commonly thought. Rather, a large, organized workforce of skilled laborers and conscripted Egyptian farmers were employed. They primarily received food and shelter as payment.
  • Ancient Egyptians believed makeup had healing powers. They created red makeup from ochre and water, and green eye makeup from copper minerals.
