Fun Facts About Gibraltar

  • Gibraltar is ranked as the third smallest country. It's incredibly tiny, just 2.6 square miles, making it smaller than many airports. Yet it functions as a self-governing British Overseas Territory with its own parliament, government, and currency.
  • Dolphins and whales are so common in the Bay of Gibraltar that tourists are almost always guaranteed to see them.
  • Gibraltar has the only wild monkey population in Europe. Legend has it that as long as these 300 Barbary macaques are there, Gibraltar will remain British.
  • The Rock of Gibraltar is basically one giant monolithic rock made of Jurassic limestone. It rises 1,398 feet straight out of the sea.
  • During World War II, Britain built an entire secret city inside the Rock of Gibraltar complete with 34 miles of tunnels. This was used to house 16,000 troops plus hospitals, power stations, and a telephone exchange.
