Fun Facts About Grenada

  • Grenada has 45 beaches, over 30 dive sites and 15 waterfalls you can swim under. It also has the world's first underwater sculpture park and the largest shipwreck in the Caribbean – a 600-ft cruise liner.
  • Grenada was the last Caribbean island to be colonized by Europeans. They tried and failed several times before the French finally succeeded in defeating the fierce Carib fighters in 1650.
  • Grenada is known as the "Spice Isle" because it's one of the world's largest exporters of nutmeg and mace (around 20–25% of total world supply).
  • Grenada's national dish is "Oil Down", a one-pot stew of breadfruit, salted meat, coconut milk, turmeric, and lots of spices. It's cooked until almost all the liquid oil is absorbed.
  • Grenada holds a Carnival celebration every August called "Spicemas". One of its core events involves dancers covered in used engine oil or chocolate.
