  • Guatemala is considered the birthplace of chocolate. The ancient Maya cultivated cacao beans to produce a bitter, spicy chocolate drink for rituals and vitality, with usage dating back over 2,000 years ago.
  • Guatemala is the only country in Central America that still has a significant Maya population, with about 40% of people speaking one of the country's 23 officially recognized Mayan languages.
  • A near perfectly round, 60-foot wide, 300-foot sinkhole appeared in Guatemala City in 2010. It was so surreal that people thought it was photoshopped.
  • The Giant Kite Festival, to honor and communicate with the dead, is held every year on November 1st in Guatemala.
